Big difference here today is smart phones. People on BBSes for example didn't used to have a pocket computer while they sit on the toilet and give their toilet opinions. Compare that to your average YT comment. Empathy still exists out there and those apps/sites exist to create more apathy for sure. Even the early internet the idiots populated the chat rooms and you had to go looking for like minded people. I see social media as maybe the new AOL or something. It won't last because when it's done making money it'll disappear. Meanwhile forums, games, and all will keep moving on
